What’s the big deal?

Hey y’all!

It’s Lilly, a 16 year old who has developed what some might call an addiction to baking. They say the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem, well I don’t have a problem and I hope to never ever make a recovery. Why? Because baking is freaking awesome. Riddle me a better scenario, I dare you. First off, you choose a delicious treat that you will attempt to make(honestly choosing is the hardest part). Then, you get a recipe. In this recipe, you get two things. One a list of everything you need to succeed and then step by step instructions on how to use those things(still waiting for the recipe to life). At the end, you have a delicious dessert that is made of your hard work, but hopefully not blood, sweat, and tears(ew). You are basically set up for complete success and happiness. Baking is a science, it cannot fail you. It’s the perfect storm. Absolutely nothing is better than someone talking a bite of your own handmade dessert that you spent hours creating and uttering the ever coveted “mmhm”.

So now that we have established that baking is the best of all time, we are left with question why? Why spend your entire weekend baking and all of your free time reading blogs and marking recipes to try for your next moment of free time? Why? WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL?

Well folks, you better prop your feet up and relax cause it’s story time. I’ve always dabbled in baking, making some treats here and there(most of which turned out disastrous). Then, junior year hit and boy did life ramp up. All of a sudden classes got so much harder, homework got longer, and the social scene got a heck of a lot more complicated. All this while trying to balance figuring out growing up and finding ‘your place in the world'(pardon the horrible but true cliche). now throw in some standardized testing and the starting of a serious college process. Wow did(and really still does**) life feel like an out control whirlpool that you just can’t get a grasp of. So what did I do? I baked. Then I baked some more. It was a complete escape. When things seem out of control, a complete step by step to success was a huge comfort. What once was just a weekend stress reliever, turned into a full form addiction and, dare I say, passion. Suddenly the difference between baking soda and baking powder or the different amounts of protein in flour became the most interesting and important things in the world and my love and curiosity for baking has only grown.

A very important thing to note in all of this: I am the epitome of an amateur baker. I mess up at least 12 times a recipe and that’s if I’m being concentrating really hard. So every time I attempt a recipe, it’s just that, an attempt. But just because you’re not a natural born whiz or you don’t succeed all the time does not mean that you can’t find great joy in it. So let’s find some recipes, simple or completely insane, and let’s see what we can do. Let’s use the wonderful art of baking to push ourselves and test our limits. Let’s mess up and maybe burn the house down in the pursuit of delicious treats. Folks, LET’S TRY IT! And with that I leave you with a fantastically cheesy quote:

Mistakes are proof that you are trying -Unknown
